Northeast Missouri Solid Waste Management District

 The Northeast Missouri Solid Waste Management District contracted with the Northeast Missouri Regional Planning Commission to perform administrative duties assigned by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources.  NEMO RPC staff devotes time toward the development and implementation of a solid waste management plan for the six-county area and oversees the regulatory and administrative documentation necessary to stay in compliance with state statutes.  Over $600,000 in District Grant Funds has been awarded since 1993 to facilitate initiatives by providing funding for infrastructure to reduce the amount of waste entering the waste stream and special collections to help area citizens rid themselves of hard-to-dispose-of items.

  1. Free Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) collections.  Three projects funded.
  2. Waste tire collection; which collected over 46,000 tires in the six-county area.  Four projects funded.
  3. Illegal Roadside Dump Cleanups and Public Awareness Project.  Two projects funded.
  4. Plan Implementation, which provided staff time for area-specific education projects.  Four projects funded
  5. Funding provided for purchase of various pieces of recycling equipment, trailers, etc.  Six projects funded.
  6. Funding provided for purchase of four chippers/shredders to process tree trimmings and storm debris into mulch, which is provided free of charge to residents.  Four projects funded.
  7. Free white goods collection, providing residents the opportunity to dispose of household appliances, which have exceeded their useful life.  White goods area banned landfill item.  Two projects funded.
  8. Chipper/shredder for the City of Edina, will also be available for use by surrounding communities within Knox County.

  11. Recycling equipment funding for Truman State University, Kirksville, Missouri.
  12. Recycling equipment funding for Industrial Opportunity’s Inc., Kahoka, Missouri.

Every District grant application submitted received at least partial funding this year.  Typically, District grant applications are received from December to February, announced in April, with project implementation beginning in July of the same year.
